Arthur Van Roy oversaw the running of their pub and farm, and eventually became the driving force behind the construction of the brewery as we know it today. Speciale refers to the style of beer "Special Belge".
History[ edit ] As early asrecords can be found in Steenhuffel 's archives detailing a manor named Den Hoorn. He chose to still top-ferment his beer in the old Brabant style rather than brew it using newer methods, such as those used to brew Pilsner.
De Hoorn, owned then by Jean-Baptiste De Mesmaecker, was later to develop into the brewery we know today. Aside from being a finest quality artisanal beer, it is bottled with marc de Champagne, a spirit produced in the Champagne-making process, to forge a link between grape and grain.
The first s of brewing activity at Steenhuffel came in Pouring hazy pale gold with a light white head, this richly malted brew releases waves of citrus, yeast and wheat, which dominate the palate, accompanied by light, zesty, lemon spdciale. In Arthur Van Roy taught his son, Alfred, how to brew beer. InVan Roy decided to give his beer a proper name, calling it Speciale Palm.
Soft, and with a light bitterness, this medium-bodied, lightly carbonated beer offers a pleasingly dry, floral finish. A deed of census mentions two breweries, De Hoorn and De Valck. This brewing room is known as "Brewing Room 1" today.
This, coupled with what Alfred learned at the Brussels brewing school, led to the first copper brewing room with a mill being built. The De Hoorn brewery was not spared the violence of World War Iand although it seciale completely destroyed inVan Roy decided to rebuild it.
